While digital sensors remain the leading digital dental x-ray systems on the market, many dentists have discovered that phosphor plates are more ideal for their practice. In short, they are easy to use, comfortable for patients and may be more familiar to a staff unaccustomed to fully digital systems. Nevertheless, although phosphor plates have some advantages over sensors, most dentists should consider using them in conjunction with a sensor system rather than instead of it.

Easy to Use

Since the image-taking process is similar to film, many dentists find phosphor plates to be an easier transition into digital radiography than sensors.  The plates are light and thin like film, plus they don’t require cables, connectors, equipment, or other complex attachments.

Easy to Replace

Processing systems for phosphor plates are much less expensive than fully digital systems, and the plates themselves are low-cost and easy to replace, which may appeal to many dentists seeking to cut down on the maintenance costs of their equipment.

Low Cost

Although currently in widespread use, digital sensors still require a significant investment on the part of dental practitioners.  And for many large or group practices, a single digital sensor unit will not fully accommodate the number of patients requiring images.  On the other hand, one phosphor plate system should have no problem doing so.
